Interview
Who recommended you to go to Team Doctors, and why did you go there? My friend Nora Reyes recommended him, and he was in attendance at one of my fights. I talked to him about the pain I had in my jaw.
What are some training secrets you learned at Team Doctors? Strength training was new to me. I had never trained to get stronger.
How does the strength and conditioning regimen differ from the sit-ups and rope jumping that is the norm at boxing gyms? The gyms focus on boxing skills and reflexes. Team Doctors focuses on body health and increasing strength.
How has the strength and conditioning training affected your; Speed? I am definitely faster now.
Power? My punches are stronger and snappier.
Protection from body shots? My abs are stronger, and I am able to take body shots better.
Protection from knockouts? Being stronger overall physical has helped.
Footwork? I haven't noticed any change in my footwork.
Confidence? Feeling stronger has boosted my confidence a lot.
Protection from joint injury or re-injury? Yes, my joints are stronger and absorb shots better.
What has been the most notable change in your performance due to your strength and conditioning at Team Doctors? With greater upper body strength and better body definition, came stronger punching power.
Have you had any trouble with diet, weight loss or loss of strength with your current training regimen? I have no weight management problems.
Have you gone up or down in weight since training at Team Doctors? I only go up or down in weight if I need to for a specific fight coming up.
Do you feel as strong at this weight? Yes, stronger.
Has this affected your stamina? Not at all.
What has been your most notable fight to date? The '02 National Golden Gloves Championships. I was runner up.
Worst fight? The finals of the '03 National Golden Gloves.
What has been your most memorable moment in fighting? I enjoyed the 2003 National Golden Gloves Tour the best.
What is the greatest asset or skill that makes you so good as a fighter? My strongest asset is that I have both speed and power.
What areas of your training are you currently focusing the most effort to improve? My offense. I want to become more aggressive. I am doing a lot more sparring and shadow boxing to better this.
Who were your boxing role models growing up, or who inspired you to want to box? I didn't have any role models, and did not know a lot about boxing. I went to watch my little brother train at the boxing gym, and I got hooked.
Who would you like to fight most in your future? I don't have any particular opponents I want to fight, I just want to fight the best in the sport, so that I can become the best.
What do you regret thus far in your career? So far, I have no regrets.
What are your plans for the future? I want to remain an amateur for another year or so before I turn professional.
What are your favorite strength and conditioning exercises that you felt benefited you the greatest? I like the full regimen. I don't think any one exercise is more important than another.
What is your current conditioning training? I run daily 2-3 miles, unless I do not go to the gym. On those days I run 4 miles or more. I go to the gym most days where I shadow box for 5 or so rounds. Then I Spar every other day for 6-8 rounds. On the days that I do not spar, I hit the heavy bag for 6 rounds, on sparring days I hit the heavy bag for 3 rounds. I do a few minutes of rope work, and then work the speed bag.
What advice would you give a young Golden Gloves fighter? Everyday, give it your best, and then you will always know that you have done your best win or lose.
What is your training regimen immediately following a fight? How long do you rest? When do you resume boxing training? When do you start sparring? When do you start strength and conditioning drills? I usually don't take any time off after a fight unless it is a tournament where I have several fights in a short time. Then I will usually take one week off to rest.
