Interview conducted in 5/9/2004

Who recommended you go to Team Doctors? And why did you go there?

Several of the fighters that I know recommended him (Dr. Stoxen) highly. I had a rib that was out of the cartilage and causing me a lot of pain. It hurt to spar or even train.

What did you like about the training?

The workout routine that I was taught was excellent.

I understand that you got training advice from Team Doctors. What did you learn from the advice that you got there?

They taught me how to get a COMPLETE workout. I also learned how to use weights in my training. Of course, lighter weights, but with more reps.

What did you like best about the strength and conditioning advice that you got at Team Doctors?

The workouts were far less stressful, and the workout environment was really good. I got great advice and support from the whole team there. His employees are very knowledgeable.

How does the strength and conditioning regimen differ from the sit-ups and rope jumping that is the norm at boxing gyms?

There is definitely more weight training and strength training. AB training and not boxing lessons.

How has the strength and conditioning effected your;

Speed?

My speed has increased a lot because I switched to lower weights but more reps.

Power?

I feel stronger now, with more power to my punches.

Protection from knockouts?

My neck muscles are much stronger and my head doesn't snap back as much when I do get hit.

Confidence?

Yes! I do feel more confident with the increase in speed and power!

Protection from joint injury or re-injury?

Yes, the strengthened chest muscles have helped me prevent re-injury to my ribs.

What has been the most notable change in your performance due to your strength and conditioning training at Team Doctors?

The biggest difference has been the increase in my strength!

What has been your best fight to date?

My very last fight against Leroy Newton (in which Jimmy won by second round TKO). I felt that my punches were stronger-more powerful. I also put my punches together much better.

What has been your most memorable moment in fighting?

My very first pro fight against Henry "Superstar" Cokes. He was a very experienced fighter and I learned a lot in that fight.

What is your greatest asset or skill that makes you a better fighter?

My height and reach are my biggest advantage.

What areas of your training are you currently focusing the most effort to improve?

I want to develop my boxing skills in general. Ring generalship, movement, and developing my jab.

Who were your boxing role models growing up, or who inspired you to box?

My brother motivated me to box. Jesus Chaves, former WBC Champion.

What do you regret in your career thus far?

I have no regrets.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to get an Illinois State Title, or a WBC Jr. Title. But every boxers dream is to win a World Title.

What is your training regimen immediately following a fight? How long do you rest? When do you start boxing training? When do you start sparring? When do you start strength and conditioning drills?

I am going back into the gym on Monday (immediately following his last fight just three days ago). I plan on returning to my full regimen of training and boxing.

What advice would you give a young Golden Gloves fighter?

1) Do not rush to go pro. Get your experience!

2) Don't let your amateur success inflate your ego.

3) Don't forget your schooling. Education is important. Have something to fall back on.

What is your current conditioning training?

I run three miles every morning. Then I do 30 minutes jumping rope. 6 rounds of shadow boxing. 4 rounds of the heavy bag. 4 rounds of the double end bag. 3 rounds of the speed bag. And my AB workout.

What are your favorite strength and conditioning exercises?

My favorites are the AB workouts and crunches. Then the weight training that I do three times a week, and dumbbells.
